Learning Support

Students who are identified with learning needs are supported through a variety of ways at Napier Intermediate.


Special Education Needs Co-Ordinator (SENCO)

The special education needs co-ordinator is responsible for co-ordinating all the special needs referrals/programmes win consultation with the staff. In this role support classroom teachers in developing and implementing appropriate programmes for identified students who struggle with their learning. The SENCO liaises with support agencies to assess students and works in conjunction with the staff to provide teacher aide assistance within the classroom as the need arises.


Teacher Aides

Teacher aides are used in a variety of ways at Napier Intermediate to support the learning of individuals. Some of the ways the teacher aides help teachers are:

  • Supporting student learning
  • Prepare resources
  • Assist teacher programmes
  • Work one on one basis
  • Running of TARP programmes

Numeracy Support

Numeracy is run four times a week during numeracy time. There are four small groups that work with a teacher and teachers' aides which means more one to one time for the students.

The students work on their basic facts and number strategies. The students are evaluated on a regular basis. Those that progress well with their learning they are able to go back to their class for numeracy.


Literacy Support

Students with identified literacy needs are evaluated to identify their exact needs. A literacy programme is put together to address the needs of the student. Some of the programmes the students are undertaking are:

  • Spelling Rulz
  • Reading
  • TARP
  • Toe by Toe

Some of the programmes are able to be done within the classroom, as part of the classroom programme, these are supported either by a teacher aid within the classroom or a peer tutor. Other programmes require the students work one on one with a teacher aid in the library or the resource room.

The students are monitored and evaluated on a regular basis and their progress is tracked by the teacher aides and the classroom teacher.
